Study Uncovers New Risk Factor for Pregnancy
July 20, 2009 - Research conducted by Dr. Pangoita Kitsantas, Health Administration and Policy, was recently published in the International Journal of Medicine.  The study found that women who suffered a previous child death were more likely to suffer an infant death or deliver a premature or low birth-weight infant in subsequent pregnancies.  Learn more about the study and its research implications in University News.

June 16, 2009 - Best-selling author Gail Sheehy visited HAP June 16th to interview faculty member Andrew Carle for her new book, "The Caring Passage". The book will focus on family caregivers of older adults, and issues of providing care either at home or from a distance. She met with Carle to discuss his work as Director of the nation's only academic program in Assisted Living/Senior Housing Administration, and his particular expertise in "Nana" technology, a termed coined by Carle to describe technologies that can improve quality of life for seniors.

GPS Shoes for Alzheimer's patients

New HAP Fellow
Dr. Tony Yang, Department of Health Administration and Policy, has been selected as a NCHS/AcademyHealth Health Policy Fellow for one year beginning in September, 2009. Dr. Yang will spend most of his time at the National Center for Health Statistics (NCHS) in Hyattsville, MD focusing on a health services research agenda. Congratulations Dr. Yang!

Partnership Issue Brief Released
Dr. Mark Meiners recently released the issue brief, "Long-Term Care Insurance Partnership: Considerations for Cost-Effectiveness". This brief reviews considerations for states in how to design and market Partnership programs to achieve cost-effectiveness. It is the third in a series of briefs produced through CHCS' Long-Term Care Partnership Expansion project. Read the brief.

Former CHPRE Director Appointed by President Obama to Head of HRSA
President Obama today announced the appointment of one of the nation’s top rural health care professionals as Administrator of the Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA). Dr. Mary Wakefield, former Director of the Center for Health Policy Research and Ethics at George Mason, will oversee this critical agency, which helps to deliver health care to those who are uninsured and underserved by our current health care system. Improvement of the Year Award Winners

The Department of Health Administration and Policy in the College of Health and Human Services announced four winners of its annual Improvement of the Year Award at a banquet on April 24.

This competitive award was created to recognize teams from mid-Atlantic health organizations that have significantly improved the quality of care in their hospitals or health care systems. This year, 21 projects were submitted. Read more about the awards in the Mason Gazette.

HAP Post-Doc Receives Award

Janusz Wojtusiak, post-doctoral researcher in the Department of Health Administration and Policy, received the best poster presentation award at the Sixth International Conference on Machine Learning and Applications in Cincinnati, OH, December 13-15, 2007, for the paper "The Natural Induction System AQ21 and Its Application to Data Describing Patients with Metabolic Syndrome: Initial Results." The paper authored by Janusz Wojtusiak, Ryszard Michalski, Thipkesone Simanivanh, and Anna Baranova is available from the website of the GMU Machine Learning and Inference Laboratory (www.mli.gmu.edu), which has recently moved to the Department of Health Administration and Policy.

Mason Establishes First International and Niche Housing Internships for Assisted Living Students

Building on its national reputation for innovative curricula, the Mason Program in Assisted Living/Senior Housing Administration has implemented two first-in-industry internships to be completed by students during the fall 2007 semester. Read more in the Gazette.

Congratulations to Assisted Living alum Kwaku Boateng for his promotion to an Executive Director position at Sunrise Senior Living. Kwaku was also the recipient of the Rachel Merrit Award for Senior Housing in Spring 2007.
