Refresher Course for Returning Nurses

SPECIAL NOTICE: The Fall Refresher Course is now Full.  Our next class will start early 2010. 

  • Fall Refresher Class Dates will be:
    Classroom: Tuesdays, Sep 22, 29, Oct 6, 13, 20, 27, Nov 10 & 17
    Clinicals (students will be assigned to one of the following clinical groups):
    Weekend Clinical - Oct 3-4, Oct 24-25, Nov 7-8, Nov 21-22
    Mostly Mondays Clinical: Sep 28, Oct 5, 18, 19, 26, Nov 9, 16, & 23

The Refresher Course for Returning Nurses is sponsored by The College of Health and Human Services and awards 90 contact hours (9 CEUs) as a non-credit activity.  The Med-Surg review includes a one day a week classroom instruction at the George Mason Campus in Fairfax, VA and A supervised clinical practicum at a local hospital.

General Requirements

Criminal Background Check/Drug Screening/Immunization Tracking/CPR Requirements: Academic Outreach complies with CHHS and clinical agency policy and the following are required: background check, drug screen, immunizations, physical exam, health insurance, Virginia nursing license and CPR certification.  Please note new information regarding these requirements in the course information brochureIf you are accepted as a student into this refresher course, you will be emailed instructions on how the complete these requirements.

License: All RN/LPN students are required to provide a copy of an active, valid Virginia license, or a copy of an active, valid out-of-state license and a copy of an application for a Virginia license plus a copy of your check made payable to the State Board of Nursing.

Physical Examination: All students are required to have had a physical examination within the past year and a negative chest x-ray or tuberculin skin test within the past year. A record of immunizations is also required. Students should secure Hepatitis B Vaccine series at the earliest possible opportunity.

CPR Requirement: All students must have current CPR certification (Healthcare Provider Level).
