Academic Advising

Student Affairs coordinates academic advising for all students enrolled in the College of Health and Human Services.  All students are assigned to an academic advisor, and should plan to meet with the advisor at least once per semester.  Your advisor is your advocate, and he or she will be a valuable resource for curriculum planning, assistance with academic problems, and as a guide for university resources. Advisors will also refer students to other campus services when appropriate.

Undergraduate and Graduate students can find out who their academic advisor is by visiting logging into Patriot Web and looking under "Student Information".

When should I see my advisor?

You should get to know your advisor and should meet with your advisor at least once per term.

  1. Meet with your advisor each semester for curriculum planning.
  2. See your advisor as soon as possible if you find yourself facing academic difficulties.  Your advisor can help you address academic problems, and can refer you to university services when needed.

How do I contact my advisor?

Advisors have office hours available for students, and most are willing to schedule appointments if you cannot make office hours due to a scheduling conflict.  To contact your advisor, please use the email address or phone number listed in the CHHS faculty and staff directory.  If your advisor is Susan Swett, Brian Gillette, or Whitney Gaston, please schedule an advising appointment by calling 703-993-1901.

Pre-Enrollment Advising

Student Affairs provides undergraduate pre-enrollment advising to freshman, transfer students, and students interested in pursuing a second undergraduate degree. Graduate level pre-enrollment advising is available through the school or department of interest. Pre-enrollment advising is available only by appointment.  If you are interested in pre-enrollment advising, please call 703-993-1901 to schedule an appointment.  Bring copies of all college or university transcripts with you to the advising appointment. International students must have their transcripts evaluated by a nationally recognized credential evaluation service, such as the World Education Service, Inc (WES).

GMU Student Resources and Services

GMU has many useful programs available to students. The links on the resources and services page will take you off the CHHS site.  You may need to contact one of these offices, or your advisor may refer you to one of these services if you are facing academic issues best handled by other offices on campus.
