William S. Cartwright, Ph.D.,health economist, is an assistant professor in the Department of Health Administration and Policy. Dr. Cartwright has an extensive background in federal service. He first joined the National Institutes of Health with his appointment to the National Institute on Aging in 1980 as an intramural research scientist. He joined National Institute on Drug Abuse in 1990 and served until he departed to help develop the Center for Substance Abuse Treatment, Substance Abuse and Mental Health Administration. Dr. Cartwright returned to NIDA in 1996 to create the economic research program in prevention and treatment of drug abuse. He publishes and lectures on financing, cost-benefit analysis, cost-effectiveness analysis, and health policy. He received his doctorate in economics from Indiana University and his B.A. from Rutgers University.
