Rita M. Carty is Professor and Dean Emerita, College of Health and Human Services at George Mason University in Fairfax, Virginia and Immediate Past Secretary General of the Global Network of WHO Collaborating Centres for Nursing and Midwifery Development. She received her Bachelors degree and an honorary PhD degree from Duquesne University in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. Both her Masters and Doctorate are from the Catholic University of America in Washington, D.C. Dr. Carty is a past President and Board of Directors member of the American Association of Colleges of Nursing and holder of the Sister Bernadette Armiger award. In 2002, she was named AACN President Emeritus. She has served as a member of the Executive Committee of the Council of Baccalaureate and Higher Degree Programs of the National League for Nursing and a Board member of the Southern Council on Collegiate Education for Nursing. She is a Fellow of the American Academy of Nursing, a member of Sigma Theta Tau, an honorary member of the Golden Key National Society and a founding member of the George Mason University chapter of Phi Beta Delta International Honor Society. Dr. Carty is a 1992 recipient of the United States Public Health Service Chief Nurse Award. In July of 2000, Dr. Carty was elected as Secretary General of the Global Network of WHO Collaborating Centres for Nursing and Midwifery Development, and served in that position until June 2004. During that time she was also a member of the Global Advisory Group on Nursing and Midwifery to the Director General of the World Health Organization.
Since the beginning of her career in higher education in 1966, Dr. Carty has published and consulted extensively and participated in grant and manuscript preparation, as well as individual peer review. As former Head of the (WHO) Collaborating Centre, Dr. Carty engaged in regional, national and international activities and consultation. Presently, her main interests focus on international heath care education, collaboration and contracting, health policy and international health care.
