In the past, Susan Durham has worked as an Operating Room Nurse in the Army Nurse Corps, a Public Health Nurse in Fairfax County and then the Chicago Board of Health, and as a Pediatric Nursing instructor with the Illinois Masonic School of Nursing. She taught Chronic Care Nursing at Evanston Hospital School of Nursing, and part-time at the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit of Fairfax Hospital. She began teaching in the undergraduate nursing program at George Mason University in 1992. Susan Durham is a Vietnam Veteran decorated for outstanding service. She served active duty for five years, and was activated for Desert Storm to Walter Reed Army Medical Center. She served on the Veteran's Administration Advisory Board for Women Veterans. She is a member of Sigma Theta Tau's Board of Directors, and participated in the Operation Smile Mission to Managua, Nicaragua in 1999.
