Susan Durham has been teaching for fifteen years at George Mason University in the College of Health and Human Services (CHHS), School of Nursing. She received a Bachelor of Science Degree in Nursing from The Pennsylvania State University, a Masters in Public Health from The University of Illinois and will complete her course work for her PhD in nursing at the finish of this academic year, 2009-2010. Susan’s teaching responsibilities are in the undergraduate program where she coordinates the Writing Intensive Course and has been responsible for many innovations in that course that have provided a basis for assessing writing outcomes for program evaluation. She also teaches the senior nursing preceptorship course where she incorporated the use of Inquiry-based Learning (IBL) conferences to assist students in analyzing patient information and applying theory to practice. Susan currently serves on the CHHS Faculty Council, the Senate Writing Across the Curriculum Committee, the Provost’s committee on university writing assessment – the Writing Assessment Group, the Advisory Board for the Center for Teaching Excellence and the Technology Across the Curriculum task force.
In addition Susan is the recipient of the Evelyn Cohalen Teaching Award within her college and in 2006 was one of five recipients of the University Excellence in Teaching Award, a highly competitive award and the highest teaching honor given to faculty members by the university.
Susan retired from the United State Army Nurse Corps Reserves as a Lieutenant Colonel where she served at Walter Reed Army Medical Center during Operation Desert Storm. Her volunteer activities have included membership on the Secretary of Veterans Affairs’ Advisory Committee for Women Veterans, as a member of the surgical team on an Operation Smile Mission to Nicaragua and as a cook and chef’s helper two mornings each month at Miriam’s Kitchen, a breakfast program for the homeless.
