Dr. Kongstvedt is a well known and highly regarded independent national authority on the health care industry with particular expertise in health insurance and managed health care. He is an Affiliate Faculty member in the Department of Health Administration and Policy, College of Health and Human Services at George Mason University where he teaches a graduate course on the topic of Health Insurance and Managed Health Care in addition to other academic work. Dr. Kongstvedt also is principal of the P.R. Kongstvedt Company, LLC, a consulting firm advising health care executives on strategy, operations and effective decision making to achieve greater success. Dr. Kongstvedt has 30 years experience in health care in a variety of roles: as a partner and senior executive in global consulting firms, a senior executive leading health plans, managed care and health insurance organizations, and as a practicing physician.
He is the primary author and editor of several widely used books, including two recently updated textbooks that are generally considered to be "the bibles" of managed care: The Essentials of Managed Health Care, Fifth Edition, published by Jones & Bartlett in March 2007, and Managed Care, What it Is and How it Works, Third Edition, published in September 2008. He is also a frequent contributor to various publications, a regular speaker and presenter at industry conferences and client-sponsored events, and serves as an advisor to The CBS Evening News with Katie Couric on topics related to health reform, health insurance and managed healthcare.
Dr. Kongstvedt is a board-certified internist and Fellow in the American College of Physicians. He received his BSc and MD degrees as well as his internal medicine training at the University of Wisconsin.
