HAP 307: Assisted Living Management & Philosophy

This course provides an overview of the growth of the assisted living/senior housing industry, its role in the health care continuum, current and/or proposed regulatory environments, and differences between assisted living and other forms of senior health care/senior living services. Specific instruction is provided in both the philosophy and day-to-day management of assisted living communities, including resident care, operations, finance/budgeting, human resources/staffing, and successful marketing and community relations. The course also examines the future of the industry, including cutting-edge programs/technologies and approaches to creating the next generation of assisted living/senior housing services.

HAP 378 Health Care Delivery in the United States

Introduces history and current structure and function of U.S. health care delivery. Explores components and subsystems of health care, and sociopolitical (public and private) context that shapes system and affects access to health care and delivery of health services.

GCH 480: Health Aspects of Aging

Studies physiological and psychological factors that influence health and have implications for preventive measures in disease and health disorders in the aging. Nutrition, the nature of health problems, and methods of assessing physical and psychological needs are examined.

NURS 492: Death, Dying, and Decision Making

Interdisciplinary examination and analysis of clinical care of dying persons provides the focus of this, course along with psychosocial issues related to the processes of death and dying. Special emphasis is on the application of ethical principles in resolution of complex problems for individuals with life threatening illnesses and their families as caregivers and/or decision makers. Policies, laws, and regulations that impact caregivers and health service providers are reviewed, including advance directives, do-not-resuscitate orders, and assisted suicide. Bereavement as a part of the death, dying, and grieving process for family members is presented.

HAP 498: Health Management Internship

Capstone course consisting of a two hour weekly seminar and a working practicum in a health related organization. Working under the supervision of practicum faculty and an assigned agency preceptor, the student conducts an independent administrative project for the agency. Students utilize organizational assessment information and explore organizational structure, roles, and functions within the organization. Critical thinking, project planning and management, communication and analytic skills are integrated in the performance of the practicum and development of the project product.

GCH 585: Care and Management of Persons with Alzheimers

Focuses on the care of persons with dementing illnesses in acute, community and long term care settings. Strategies for managing and evaluating care provided by family caregivers and allied health personnel also are discussed.

GCH 637: Normal Aging and Health Deviations

Examines the biopsychosocial aspects of aging. Emphasis is on examining the effects of age changes and health deviations on the functional capacity of older persons, and on interventions and promotion of the elderly's capacity for self-care.

HAP 650: Assisted Living/Senior Housing Management & Operations

This course provides an understanding and knowledge of the most rapidly expanding form of senior care and housing in the U.S. Practices, trends, and issues related to the administration of assisted living/senior housing communities are reviewed, with an emphasis on licensing, budgeting, staffing, resident care, risk management, and hospitality services. Evolution of the senior housing industry in terms of demographic, cultural, and policy environments are also analyzed. Additionally, students are required to research a Top-10 industry provider, as well as to site-visit and incorporate course concepts in the analysis of an actual senior housing community.

HAP 678: Introduction to the US Health System

Course is required, as a prerequisite to all other certificate courses, for students who do not have familiarity with all aspects (financing, providers, care systems) of the U.S. health care system and recent working experience. Explores the structure, function, and financing of the health care delivery systems in the U.S. Designed to familiarize students with the development of the various sub-systems of care and the ways in which public, private, and social forces influence the politics of healthcare, shape the system, and impact public health. HAP 705: Healthcare Strategic Management and Marketing

This course develops executive skills for strategic decision making through the use of marketing-based tools. The course covers the development of business plans through Situation Analysis, Strategy Formulation, Strategy Implementation, and Strategic Control. Tools applied include SWOT analysis, Mission statement testing, Adaptive, Market Entry, and Positioning stratgies, Productive Lifecycle management, Value Chain application, and management of both evolutionary and revolutionary change for healthcare organizations.

HAP 790: Health Management Practicum and Capstone Seminar (Course Website)

Prerequisite: all course work. Team-based field practicum in health management, problem analysis, and project management in health care or service organization. Learning teams define complex problem in assigned facility and analyze problem with recommendations for management decision action. Analysis provides context in which theoretical concepts and management skills are applied. Uses case study analyses to explore problem-solving approaches in variety of situations and health care or service organizations.
