HAP Seminar Series
October 2, 2009 - Brad Gray of The Urban Institute will present "Charitable Expectations for Nonprofit Hospitals".  Nonprofit hospitals have often been criticized as insufficiently charitable. Three kinds of evidence is cited: anecdotal accounts, research making comparisons with for-profits, and research making comparisons with estimates of the value of tax exemptions. Requirements for charitable spending thresholds are common policy proposals. I'll argue that such proposals are based on a misreading of what it means for nonprofits to be charitable and an inadequate reading of the research evidence. Wiser public policies would cover the uninsured and require better accountability of nonprofits' charitable performance.

HAP Faculty featured in BBC Documentary
September 30, 2009 - Dr. Tracy Koehlmoos, currently working in Bangladesh, is featured in the BBC Documentary "Think Zinc".

Program Description: Diarrhoea kills over 1.5 million children every year. This is more than AIDS, malaria and measles combined.

It is in the developing world where this deadly condition takes its heaviest toll. In countries such as Bangladesh children are already malnourished, sanitation is poor and running water is seen as a luxury. Here, zinc treatment has been estimated to save the lives of as many as 50,000 children a year.

Will zinc be the silver bullet in the fight against diarrhoea and can it help to save the lives of millions of children globally?
