Mason Researchers
Work to Smooth Transitions for Young Students with Cancer
Mason researchers Jean B. Moore and Carol Kaffenberger have joined forces and
are working on the Student Reentry Project, which examines how students who have
cancer and their school systems are affected. Read

Governor
Kaine Announces Award of Health Technology Grants
Governor Kaine announced a $150,00 grant award to Northern
Virginia Regional Health Information Organization (NOVARHIO) in Fairfax
County. NOVARHIO, in partnership with INOVA Health System and Erickson Senior
Living, will be the first to create a mechanism to ensure electronic access
to patient medication histories in the emergency room. NOVARHIO also will
simultaneously launch a program to educate citizens in northern Virginia
about the need for a personal health record. CHHS Faculty Alan Goldberg
is a charter board member of NOVRHIO, and CHHS Faculty Jane Woods, Goodlett
McDaniel, and Mark Meiners serve on NOVARHIO's steering committee. View

Dr. Shirley Travis addressed the College of Health and Human Service along with
honored guests at the Second Annual Dean's State of the College on August 23,
2007. Plans for the upcoming year and beyond were outlined, and new faculty were

Honors for CHHS Professor
Dr. Ryszard Michalski, Endowed Professor and Director of the CHHS/Provost's Office
Center for Discovery Science and Health Informatics, received the Officer's Cross
of the Order of Merit of the Republic of Poland, awarded to him by the President
of Poland Lech Kaczynski. This high honor was bestowed on him in recognition
of his body of scientific work and his facilitation of collaborative works between

Health and Human Services Professor Lisa Pawloski explores global trends of childhood
obesity, highlighting her research conducted in Mali, Nicaragua, and Thailand.

Visiting Scholar Speaks on Palliative Care
John Barkley, MD, FCCP, the Vice President for Medical Services of Hospice & Palliative
Care Charlotte Region was recently a Visiting Scholar at the George Mason University
College of Health & Human Services.
Dr. Barkley is a nationally recognized scholar in the fields of hospice and
palliative medicine. He holds boards in pulmonary medicine, internal medicine,
critical care, and hospice and palliative medicine. While at Mason, Dr. Barkley
gave two presentations, and participated in research discussions and clinical
rounds.
Dr. Barkley's first presentation, "Artificial
Enteral Nutrition",
was given for the Mason faculty and regional scholars.
Later, Dr. Barkley gave a presentation to the meeting of the Regional Palliative
Care Interest Group: "The
Chronically Critically Ill."

visit.

Alzheimer's Study Funded
Jeanne Sorrell, School
of Nursing, and Catherine Tompkins, Department
of Social Work, have received notice that their research study, Ethics
of Respect for Spirituality in Persons Living with Alzheimer's Disease,
has been funded by the Commonwealth of Virginia through the Alzheimer's
and Related Diseases Research Award Fund. Further information about the
