The graduate certificate in nutrition prepares students to apply nutrition principles and the latest scientific evidence and methods of nutrition to health practice and research among different populations. The program emphasizes understanding the role of nutrition in population health and well-being and thep development of skills required in the practice, analysis, and interpretation of nutrition-related information and data among individuals and populations. Students will learn nutrition principles, how to assess nutritional status of individuals, communities, and populations; and how to develop and evaluate nutrition interventions at the individual, community, and population level.
Applicants must hold a bachelor’s degree from a regionally accredited institution and have a minimum of a 3.0 GPA to be considered. Admission to the program is competitive, and a variety of criteria are evaluated in the admissions process, including the strength of the undergraduate record and any postbaccalaureate coursework, the GRE/GMAT (if available), career goals, letters of recommendation, professional and/or volunteer experience, evidence of the ability to write and conduct research at the graduate level, and any additional evidence of potential success in the program.
Applications are considered for the fall and spring semesters. For application deadlines and detailed application requirements, please refer to the Graduate Application Database at admissions.gmu.edu/grad/matrix/. The online Application for Graduate Admissions can be found on the admissions website at admissions.gmu.edu.
Certificate candidates must complete required course work with a minimum GPA of 3.00, with no more than 3 credits with a grade of C, to earn the certificate. Students pursuing graduate certificates alone must be admitted to Mason in degree status and more than half of the credits required for the graduate certificate must be taken after admission to the program. Students may also pursue a graduate certificate as a secondary program concurrently with a master’s or doctoral degree. They must be admitted to the master’s or doctoral program in degree status, and must be admitted to the graduate certificate at least one semester before completion of the certificate requirements. For policies governing all graduate certificates, see the Academic Policies section of the catalog at catalog.gmu.edu.
Currently enrolled graduate students should consult with the Department of Nutrition and Food Studies regarding applying for a graduate certificate.
