There are a number of tracks and specialties available within the CHHS Graduate School. Applicants to the Graduate Programs can apply directly to the program in which they choose to major, OR they may apply as an undeclared major in order to take the Core Courses prior to application and admission to one of the specific tracks. Questions about these options for application should go directly to the CHHS Associate Dean for Graduate Programs. Completion of the Master's core does not guarantee admission to the Nurse Practitioner Track.
The College of Health and Human Services offers an innovative MSN Track to prepare Nurse Practitioners in Primary Care. Options are offered in 1) the Family Nurse Practitioner and 2) the Adult Nurse Practitioner specialties.
Graduates of the GMU nurse practitioner track will provide primary care to clients in a variety of settings. These settings include health maintenance organizations, specialty clinics, public health clinics, hospitals, nursing homes, home care, family practice settings and neighborhood and community clinics serving the medically underserved.
The GMU NP program is a competency based curriculum; graduates are highly regarded and historically readily find employment upon graduation. The program is recognized locally, nationally, and internationally. Our graduates pass their respective certification exams through the ANCC (FNP, ANP) well above the national mean. George Mason University CHHS is listed among the top graduate and NP programs in the country in U.S. News and World Report's Special Fall Edition.
The Master's Nursing Program at George Mason University is accredited by the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education, One Dupont Circle, NW, Suite 530, Washington DC 20036, (202)887-6791.
The School of Nursing complies with the standards set forth by the National Organization of Nurse Practitioner Faculty (NONPF), and is accredited by the Virginia State Board of Nursing (VSBN).
Students are strongly encouraged to submit all required admission materials as early as possible. Please note that offers of admission are made only for the fall semester. Spring admission is not offered. The fall application deadline is April 1st.
Students who are already admitted to a GMU MSN program and wish to apply to the Nurse Practitioner program need to complete a Request for Internal Change of Major Form. These student records will be pulled and reviewed at the same time as other applicants are reviewed in the Fall for admission to the NP program.
When applying, please make sure that it is clear whether you are applying for the Family track OR the Adult track and whether or not you are applying for Full-time or Part-time status. The letter of acceptance into the program will specifically state which track and in what status you have been accepted.
GMU graduate tuition rates will be charged for all course work offered at GMU. Tuition may vary from year to year. Liability insurance for nurse practitioner students is included in the cost of tuition.
Full-time students may apply for Division of Nursing Professional Nurse Traineeships and teaching assistant ships which may be available. Contact (703) 993-1947 for information. The U.S. Public Health Service offers the National Health Service Corps Scholarship program. The Mary Marshall Scholarship is available to Virginia residents who currently live and plan to practice in an underserved area of Virginia after graduation. Information packets for both these scholarships are available through the Nurse Practitioner Program Office.
