About the Program

The second degree pathway is designed for previously degreed students interested in pursuing a second undergraduate degree in nursing. This accelerated 12 month program begins in the fall semester. Students should apply to GMU as transfer students for fall admission AND submit the second degree application to the School of Nursing.

Admission Requirements

Admission requirements for the Accelerated Pathway for Second Degree Students are as follows:

In addition, candidates for this pathway must satisfy one (1) of the following requirements:

  • Minimum 2.75 GPA in undergraduate degree (or)
  • 3.0 GPA in the last 30 credits of undergraduate degree (or)
  • Bachelors and Masters Degrees

Special Requirements

Because of the intensity of this program, it is strongly recommended that students not work while enrolled in these accelerated courses.

All nursing students must be certified yearly in Basic Life Support CPR- Level C.

Two of the three injections for Hepatitis B immunization must be completed prior to enrolling in clinical/practicum/internship courses. The third injection must be completed by SIX MONTHS of injection #2. (See College of Health and Human Services Form for additional health requirements that must be completed before starting clinicals in the junior year).

Students interested in this pathway are encouraged to contact the Student Affairs and Enrollment Management Office for advising appointment. Course titles are followed by numbers in parentheses (0:0:0), separated by colons. The numbers have the following significance:

  • First Number: credits for the course
  • Second Number: hours of lecture or seminar per week for the course
  • Third Number: hours of laboratory for the course

For independent study, readings, topics, or similar courses, individual instructors set hours.
