Admission Requirements

Students are admitted to George Mason University and specify their major as pre-nursing. They are assisted throughout the program by excellent faculty advisors. At the completion of the first two years of study, students petition for Junior Standing in nursing by filling out a separate application available in Robinson A391. Students wishing to transfer to George Mason as a nursing student must apply to GMU as a transfer student, AND make a separate application for Junior Standing to the School of Nursing. A minimum of a 3.0 GPA is required in the six designated nursing prerequisites (20-24 credit hours). All designated nursing prerequisites must be completed by the end of the spring semester prior to beginning nursing courses in the fall semester. Admission to junior standing is competitive. While a GPA of 3.0 in the nursing prerequisites is required to apply, it does not guarantee admission to the program. The application deadline for junior standing in nursing is March 1 of each year. The application can be accessed from our website at http://chhs.gmu.edu. This program is designed for full-time study.  Exceptions may be made for part-time study on a case-by-case basis.

Special Requirements

Admission to George Mason University involves 2 steps:

All nursing students must be certified yearly in Basic Life Support CPR-Level C.

Two of the three injections for Hepatitis B immunization must be completed prior to enrolling in clinical/practicum/internship courses. The third injection must be completed within six months of injection #2. (See the College of Health and Human Services health form for additional health requirements that must be completed before starting clinicals in the junior year.)

A criminal background check with a successful outcome is required prior to entering the nursing component of the program.
