Master of Science in Nursing
Advanced Clinical Nursing Track
Student Features - Richard Shrout, RN, MSN
I received my graduate degree from George Mason University in January 1999.
My track was Advanced Clinical Nursing with a clinical focus on Oncology/HIV
nursing. I completed my clinical preceptorship at George Washington University
Medical Center in Oncology.
A few of my accomplishments include:
- An education program at GW called "Health Care Mentors in Pain Control" which
established a multidisciplinary team approach for quality pain control and
clinical management;
- Development of educational fact sheets called "When In Doubt, Check
It Out" which explains to patients and their families the side effects
of commonly used chemotherapy agents; and
- My graduate research project "Are Schools of Nursing Educating Future
Nurses to Care for Patients with HIV/AIDS?" The purpose of this study
was to examine the HIV/AIDS knowledge of associate and baccalaureate nursing
students.
Throughout my course work at GMU, I was able to create a comprehensive clinical
nursing program which incorporated my professional goals and the APN's role
as consultant, administrator, researcher, and educator. These skills
as an Advanced Practice Nurse will enable me to build-on the current nursing
roles.
