Frequently Asked Questions

 "What Programs do you offer?"

We offer adult and family NP specialties. Also, only with the adult NP, a student can do 6 extra credits of geriatrics their last year and then sit for the gerontological NP exam after they have passed the adult NP national certification exam.

 "How long does it take?"

This is a master's program. It takes two years full time and three years part time.

 "What are the prerequisites?"

Again, this is a master's program. Applicants must have a BSN from an accredited college of nursing. If they are already an RN, (without a BSN), but with a bachelor's degree in another field, they can do one semester of bridge course work, and then come into the NP program. Please call (703) 993-1925 for information on bridge coursework. All applicants must have at least one year's experience as a nurse!

We do offer a new pathway - RN (without a bachelor's degree) to MSN. Please call (703) 993-1925 for more information.

We often receive calls from people with a biology, chemistry degree, etc. who are not nurses but want to be NPs. Applicants must become nurses first, so they need to come here for two years to get a BSN, or go to the Annandale Campus of Northern Virginia Community College and get an RN to combine with their previous degree, then do the one semester bridge program as listed above before entering the NP Program.

 Information Sessions

We hold small group information sessions every two weeks throughout the academic year. The schedule for these is the insert taped inside the NP brochures. The information session schedule is also available online. Please call the NP office at (703) 993-1952 to make a reservation to attend one of these sessions. Sessions are conducted by NP faculty members who will tell you all you need to know about the program, and answer any questions.

 "When is the deadline?"

Please visit our Application Deadline Calendar for updated application due dates.

If an MSN student has been accepted as an undeclared major, the student can apply for transfer in to the NP track. Graduate Admissions will review your student file.

"Can I take classes before being admitted to the NP Track"?

Prerequisite or Core MSN classes can be taken as Extended Studies coursework. Students can transfer in up to 12 credits towards the MSN track.

 "How much does it cost?"

Our NP Program is collaborative with George Washington University School of Medicine and Health Sciences. All NP students take 12 credits at GWU--they pay the GWU tuition rate for those 12 credits (4 courses). Total program costs are detailed in our brochure inserts. See the GMU Catalog for tuition. Current GWU tuition rates are located on the GWU Office of Student Accounts website.

 "Where do students do clinical?"

We have contracts with over 250 medical offices, hospitals, HMOs and clinics all over the metro area, including Washington, DC, Virginia and Maryland and West Virginia. NP students are encouraged to find and suggest new sites that will generate additional contracts/preceptors.

 Other Programs

If the student already has a Master's in Nursing (not biology, education, etc.) they can go to GWU and take a post-master's program that will prepare them to sit for the NP certification. They can call GWU for information on this program, which offers family and adult tracks at 202-994-7795 or 202-994-7734.

If the person is already a Nurse Practitioner, but prepared years ago with a certificate, not a Master's Degree--George Mason has a new program to fill in the academic gaps--call the NP Track coordinator at (703) 993-1952 or the Associate Dean for Graduate Programs at (703) 993-1913.
