Nurse Practitioner Program

NP Specialties

The Family Nurse Practitioner (FNP) specialty is designed as a 48 credit (4 semester + 1 summer) curriculum, which can be completed in 1&1/12 to 2 years of full time study, or 2&1/2 to 3&1/2 years of part time study. Students take 36 credits at George Mason University and 12 credits at The George Washington University. The program entails both didactic and clinical experiences. The clinical component for the FNP track is a minimum of 800 hours.

The Adult Nurse Practitioner (ANP) specialty is designed as a 42 credit (4 semester) curriculum, which can be completed in 1&1/2 to 2 years of full time study, or 2&1/2 years of part time study, depending on the number of credits taken each semester. Students will take 30 credits at George Mason University and 12 credits at The George Washington University. Students will have the option of selecting either an adult or adult/gerontological track. Students in the Adult/Gerontological Nurse Practitioner track may elect additional concentration in occupational health, cardiovascular care, neurology, oncology, or other specialty practice area. The program entails both didactic and clinical experiences.

The Adult/Gerontological Nurse Practitioner (GNP) specialty is designed as an additional 6 credit (clinical hours and seminars) specialty for ANP students who desire to also certify as GNPs. These additional credits are taken during the final two clinical semesters. These courses are also available to practicing nurse practitioners who wish to sit for the GNP certification exam. The clinical component for the ANP and GNP specialty combination is a minimum of 800 hours.

These six credit hours of clinical and seminar geriatric coursework are also available to practicing certified adult nurse practitioners. Applicants can enroll through the Associate Dean of Graduate Studies (703) 993-1913 and obtain information the Coordinator of the NP Track (703) 993-1952.
