Nursing Scholarships

Inova Health System is pleased to announce scholarship opportunities with funding available for Fall 2008! There are general scholarships that are available on a very limited basis and special nursing career scholarship programs that have been designed. Special Nursing Career Scholarships will be awarded to high potential Inova employees, academically recognized college seniors, students enrolled in specially designated nursing programs, and Inova nurses working on an advanced degree. Scholarships for the Special Nursing Career Scholarship Program will be awarded for the Fall 2008 semester!

Announcing: New Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) Program
Emphasis of this program will be placed on evaluating and applying the evidence that supports practice, understanding and creating practice delivery systems based on patient outcomes and assuming leadership roles in practice settings. Along with these core competencies the degree will offer opportunities to develop greater expertise in education, leadership, and clinical practice. Learn more about the program.

School of Nursing Faculty receives two awards for Nursing Reform
Last month Dr. Jennie Wu was honored by colleagues in the Peoples Republic of China for her work on nursing reform, which spans a 17 year period of work and contributions to health care in China. The first award, presented by Dr. Ying Liping, Director of Beijing University Hospital Administration, recognized her tireless effort to assist the Chinese nursing profession to adopt the nursing process and nursing outcomes in nursing practice. In presenting the second award from the Beijing Medical Education Association, Dr. Zhou Donghai, President of the Association, cited her long standing friendship and dedication to nursing reform in China. Blue Cross Blue Shield Nurse Scholar Award
The George Mason University, College of Health and Human Services, School of Nursing Master's Division announces nominations for the Blue-Cross Blue-Shield Nurse Scholar!  One award will be made.  The award may consist of up to full tuition, books, fees, and a $40,000 annual stipend.  It is expected that the award will be available to the student for a total of two (2) years. New Course spotlight - NURS 530: Nurses as Writers (3:3:0)
This course will engage students in different types of writing that nurses do in their work.  Students will learn how to use the "madman" in them to write creatively and will also gain important tips on how to organize a formal paper, write abstracts and critiques, and write for publication.  Students will choose a collaborative writing project to illustrate that writing can be fun.

Fall 2007 Refresher Course for Returning Nurses
The purpose of this course is to prepare nurses who have not been engaged in the recent practice of nursing to update their knowledge as well as clinical practice. Read more about the course at the Office of Academic Outreach Website.

Mason Nursing Students Gain International Health Experience

Visiting Scholar Speaks on Palliative Care
John Barkley, MD, Vice President for Medical Services of Hospice & Palliative Care of the Carlotte Region, gave two talks, both of which represented central issues in the evolving field of palliative medicine - "Artificial Enteral Nutrition" and "The Chronically Critically Ill." This talk was held as a part of the fall meeting of the Regional Palliative Care Interest Group.
