New Traineeship - GMU Partners for Education in Gerontology
September 15, 2009 - This unique traineeship is designed for faculty teaching in Northern Virginia and DC metropolitan area schools of nursing, who are interested in developing specialty expertise in gerontological nursing. Completion of the program will prepare participants to sit for AACN Gerontological Nurse Certification.

This program is designed to help nursing faculty extend their expertise, specialize in gerontology, and better prepare future nurses for innovative practice in care of older adults. Benefits of traineeship include fellowship and networking with Northern Virginia faculty specializing in care of older adults, interdisciplinary and community-partner opportunities for educational experiences, linkages with geriatric-focused local, state, and national experts and support for attendance at a certification preparation course. Applications for 2009-2010 admission to the traineeship has closed. Information for the 2010-2011 traineeship will be posted in Fall 2010.

Dr. Robin Remsburg Selected for Fellow Status
August 25, 2009 - Dr. Robin Remsburg, Associate Dean, Director of School of Nursing, has been selected for Fellow status by the Health Sciences Section of the Gerontological Society of America (GSA). GSA is the oldest and largest interdisciplinary organization devoted to research, education, and practice in the field of aging. Dr. Remsburg joins a group of highly accomplished members of the organization who are selected by their section peers for this honor. She will be recognized with other new Fellows at the 2009 Annual Scientific Meeting in November.

School of Nursing Associate Dean Receives HRSA Grant to Develop Geriatrics Program
August 3, 2009 - Dr. Robin Remsburg, Associate Dean, Director of the School of Nursing, has been awarded funding from Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA) to develop Partners for Education in Geriatrics (PEG). The three year program will prepare nursing faculty in geriatrics and provide opportunities to develop strategies to incorporate geriatrics content and experiences into the undergraduate nursing curriculum. The program will also prepare faculty to sit for gerontological nurse certification.

June 12, 2009 - As the beneficiary of graduate scholarship support from CareFirst BlueCross BlueShield, the School of Nursing hosted an informational exhibit at the Legislative Reception on June 11 at the JW Marriott in Washington, DC. The event brought together the non-profit community, special guests and other friends of CareFirst BlueCross BlueShield. View pictures from this event.

New Appointee to the Virginia Board of Nursing
Dr. Joyce Hahn was recently appointed by Governor Tim Kaine to a four year position on the Virginia Board of Nursing. Dr. Hahn is also serving a concurrent term on the Joint Board of Nursing and Medicine.

Nursing Students Provide Health Care and Education to Local Youth
For the past two decades, Mason’s School of Nursing (SON) has supplemented health care staffs in local elementary, middle and high schools by providing nurses in training. Read more in the Gazette.

Dr. Robin Remsburg Receives 2008 Distinguished Service Award
Dr. Remsburg was awarded the National Gerontological Nursing Association's 2008 Distinguished Service Award. This annual award is given to a member in recognition of his or her outstanding leadership, participation,and contribution toward achieving the goals of NGNA. Dr. Remsburg also attended the induction of Mason PhD in Nursing alum Dr. Karen Drenkard as a Fellow into the American Academy of Aging.

School of Nursing student selected for Research Apprenticeship Program
Fakiha Jamal Khan of the School of Nursing has been selected as one of 20 undergraduates to participate in Mason's Undergraduate Faculty-Student Apprenticeship Program. The program funds students from any discipline working with faculty mentors at Mason on original research or a creative project. Ms. Khan will work with her faculty mentor, Dr. Ann Maradiegue, on a project entitled “Family History, Depression and Anxiety Screening in Primary Care.”

School of Nursing Alums in the News
July 16, 2008 - Dr. Karen Drenkard and Dr. Barbara Hatcher have been selected for induction into the Fellowship in the American Academy of Nursing. Dr. Drenkard recently took the position of Director of the Magnet Recognition Program of the American Nursing Association. Dr. Hatcher is currently the Director of Scientific and Professional Affairs at the American Public Health Association.

Student Nurses Association Establishes Memorial Fund
Mason's Student Nurses Association has established a memorial fund in honor of the late son of Carol Urban, assistant dean of the School of Nursing, to supplement the medical expenses of full-time nursing students who are battling life-threatening diseases.

School of Nursing Faculty Recognition
Dr. Pam Cangelosi has been selected as one of the 2008 recipients of the George Mason University Teaching Excellence Awards. The award is the highest honor the University gives to faculty members who show sustained commitment to providing students with meaningful, significant learning experiences.

Susan Durham has been awarded the 2008 CHHS Habit of Excellence Award. Read more about Susan's accomplishments.

Ann Mulqueen received the Evelyn E. Cohelan Faculty Leadership Award for 2008. This award is given to a junior faculty member to provide opportunities for mentorship and development in educational leadership.

Nursing Scholarships

There are general scholarships that are available on a very limited basis and special nursing career scholarship programs that have been designed. Special Nursing Career Scholarships will be awarded to high potential Inova employees, academically recognized college seniors, students enrolled in specially designated nursing programs, and Inova nurses working on an advanced degree. Scholarships for the Special Nursing Career Scholarship Program will be awarded for the Fall 2008 semester!

School of Nursing Faculty receives two awards for Nursing Reform
Last month Dr. Jennie Wu was honored by colleagues in the Peoples Republic of China for her work on nursing reform, which spans a 17 year period of work and contributions to health care in China. The first award, presented by Dr. Ying Liping, Director of Beijing University Hospital Administration, recognized her tireless effort to assist the Chinese nursing profession to adopt the nursing process and nursing outcomes in nursing practice. In presenting the second award from the Beijing Medical Education Association, Dr. Zhou Donghai, President of the Association, cited her long standing friendship and dedication to nursing reform in China. Blue Cross Blue Shield Nurse Scholar Award
The George Mason University, College of Health and Human Services, School of Nursing Master's Division announces nominations for the Blue-Cross Blue-Shield Nurse Scholar!  One award will be made.  The award may consist of up to full tuition, books, fees, and a $40,000 annual stipend.  It is expected that the award will be available to the student for a total of two (2) years. Mason Nursing Students Gain International Health Experience

Visiting Scholar Speaks on Palliative Care
John Barkley, MD, Vice President for Medical Services of Hospice & Palliative Care of the Carlotte Region, gave two talks, both of which represented central issues in the evolving field of palliative medicine - "Artificial Enteral Nutrition" and "The Chronically Critically Ill." This talk was held as a part of the fall meeting of the Regional Palliative Care Interest Group.
