2005 Improvement of the Year Award

The 2005 award for Improvement of the Year was announced on February 2, 2005.

  • Farrokh Alemi, Ph.D. Acting Assistant Dean of College of Nursing and Health Science presented the awards (see slides, listen to presentation)
    • Operation Stroke – Inova Health System
      In order to reduce the devastating effects of stroke, the Inova Health System, Fairfax, Virginia, and the American Stroke Association have partnered in a multi-year effort titled “Operation Stroke.” The clinical component of the collaboration was designed to establish a system-wide continuum of care for stroke patients that represents best clinical practices and demonstrates improved patient outcomes and financial performance in Inova Health System hospitals.
    • ICU Infection Control Improvements – Lynchburg General Hospital of Centra Health
      The goal of the “ICU Infection Control Improvements” project at Centra Health, Lynchburg General Hospital in Lynchburg, Virginia, was to reduce blood stream infections and ventilator associated pneumonia. Standardized procedures were developed for line placement to reduce blood stream infections, bed elevation, patient sedation, and mouth care. A ventilator bundle was added to reduce time spent on ventilators. The project resulted in a 5% reduction in patient mortality and cost savings in excess of $160,000.
