SOCW 200 001: Introduction to Social Work

Introduces historical roots of social work profession and social welfare.  The person-in-environment perspective is discussed as the framework for social work knowledge, values, and skills.  This initial course in the social work curriculum is designed to introduce the student to the social work profession, professional values, ethics, field of practice, and the settings in which social workers are employed.  The profession’s commitment to diverse and at-risk populations and social/economic justice is highlighted.  Presentations by social work professionals in different fields of practice supplement classroom lecture, discussion, and small-group experiences.
