Multiple Open-Rank Biostatistics / Data Science Faculty Positions

The College of Health and Human Services at George Mason University is launching an ambitious search for multiple outstanding open faculty positions in biostatistics or data science who are committed to academic excellence and original methodologic and collaborative research in public health.

Though all research areas will be considered, preference will be given to applicants with expertise in causal inference or mediation analysis, exposome and mixtures analysis, interventional trials, longitudinal data analysis, and machine learning along with statistical and data science methods relevant to the use of complex health data including electronic health records. Midcareer and senior candidates will have an active, externally-funded program of research, an established publication record, evidence of effective classroom teaching commensurate for a tenured appointment at the rank of associate or full professor. Early career candidates will demonstrate strong evidence of potential as an independent researcher to obtain external funding and show promise of effective classroom teaching.

Responsibilities:

Successful candidates will be expected to:  1) develop or continue a program of original methodologic research; 2) engage in collaborative research; 3) teach and mentor students; 4) establish or bring an extramurally funded research program; and 5) engage in professional service in support of advancing the College’s mission.  To the extent possible, faculty will be expected to contribute synergistically to development of transdisciplinary courses, degree programs and research. 

Qualifications:

An earned doctoral degree in biostatistics, data science, computational sciences or a closely-related field (e.g., statistics); data science in health-related research experience; record of referred publications; active extramurally funded research for midcareer and senior candidates; strong oral and written communication skills; and an ability to teach graduate level biostatistics and research courses and mentor students/postdoctoral fellows. 

Preferred Qualifications:

About the College of Health and Human Services:

Faculty will initially be appointed in one of the 6 academic units comprising the College depending upon interests and expertise (i.e., Global and Community Health; Health Administration, Policy and Informatics; Nursing; Nutrition and Food Studies; Rehabilitation Science; and Social Work), with the option of moving to the planned department of epidemiology and biostatistics.  Located in the new Peterson Family Health Science Hall, the College has 7 accredited degree programs.  Peterson Hall comprises 165,000 square feet of offices, conference rooms, classrooms, and wet and dry labs.  The College’s research infrastructure includes DSHI (Discovery Science and Health Informatics Center with a Machine Learning Lab), imaging resources (DEXA, fMRI, movement capture) as well as physical and metabolic human assessment tools.  In the next year, the College will be opening its population health center that will support primary and behavioral health care, research and training.  The College is strategically transitioning to become a College of Public Health.  Further information about the College may be found at: https://chhs.gmu.edu.

Multiple Assistant, Associate and Full Professors in Public Health Disciplines

(Tenure-track/tenured cluster hires) 

The College of Health and Human Services at George Mason University is undertaking a large initiative to recruit outstanding faculty to develop multidisciplinary academic research teams in behavioral health, environmental health, health disparities, health policy, and obesity. Candidates with established extramurally-funded research may have the opportunity to relocate research teams or collaborators, if desired. These recruitments will support the College’s planned transition to become a college of public health in the near future. 

Appointments will begin in August, 2019, though other starting times may be possible. These are full-time (9-month) state-funded faculty positions with benefits and carry the option of competitively awarded summer funding. Required Qualifications:

An earned doctoral degree in a public health discipline (such as epidemiology, behavioral or social science, biostatistics, health informatics, health policy, nutrition, nursing, exercise or rehabilitation science, social work, or environmental science) or an earned medical degree with graduate level training in one of these areas. Evidence of research excellence as measured by a positive trajectory of refereed publications in high impact journals and professional service. Evaluations of qualifications are relative to professional rank; candidates for associate and full professor appointments must have stature as extramurally funded principal investigators and meet the University’s criteria for tenure. 

Preferred Qualifications:

Candidates for associate or full professorships ideally will have experience with nontraditional adult learning and online teaching and evidence of mentoring doctoral students and postdoctoral fellows for academic appointments. Candidates for assistant professorships ideally will have postdoctoral fellowship training with an established trajectory of refereed publications, evidence of research funding (extramurally funded grants or awards), and be part of a relocating research team. 

About the College of Health and Human Services:

The College currently comprises 6 academic units – Global and Community Health, Health Administration, Policy and Informatics, Nursing, Nutrition and Food Studies, Rehabilitation Science, and Social Work.

  • Global and Community Health offers a BS in Community Health, MS in Global Health, and an CEPH accredited MPH with concentrations in Community Health Promotion, Epidemiology, Food Security and Nutrition, Global Health, Health Policy, Public Health Communication, and Public Health Practice, enrolling nearly 600 undergraduate and over 120 graduate students. The department comprises faculty with backgrounds in social and behavioral sciences, environmental and global health, and epidemiology.
  • Health Administration, Policy and Informatics offers BS through PhD degree programs that build healthy communities for all by preparing health IT data managers and scientists, health services researchers, management and policy leaders focused on increasing the equity, effectiveness and efficiency of health services for individual and population health.
  • Nursing offers BSN, MSN, DNP, and PhD degree programs with further specialized concentrations, and is home to the Mason and Partners (MAP) clinics which provide primary care and interprofessional experiential learning opportunities. Its mission is to prepare graduates for interdisciplinary roles as clinicians, researchers, educators, and administrators in an innovative, caring, and collaborative learning environment.
  • Nutrition and Food Studies offers a MS in Nutrition degree program as well as a graduate certificate in nutrition and an undergraduate minor in nutrition. The mission of the Department is to inform students and the public about the role of food and nutrition in improving health and well-being among local and global populations through the integration of education, research, and outreach.
  • Rehabilitation Science offers BS and PhD degree programs and brings together the expertise of many different disciplines and clinical professions to consider a single issue: how we can optimize human performance in daily life and develop new interventions to promote optimal function?
  • Social Work offers BSW and MSW degree programs with an educational and research mission focusing on practice and policy interventions that improve health and well-being and promote economic and social justice, particularly for underserved individuals, families, and communities. 

The College is home to approximately 1,800 undergraduate and 800 graduate students who are supported by 120 faculty and staff. Establishment of an epidemiology department is planned as we transition to become a college of public health. Currently, the College offers 5 undergraduate degrees, 12 graduate degrees, and 11 certificates and is located in the new Peterson Family Health Sciences Hall that comprises 165,000 square feet of offices, conference rooms, classrooms, and wet and dry labs. Tenure-Track Faculty – Health Informatics

The position will serve as the teaching and research faculty in the Department of Health Information and Policy, teaching courses consistent with their background/expertise across HAP’s Health Informatics programs (BS through PhD). Associate Dean for Faculty Affairs

The Associate Dean for Faculty Affairs is a resource to and advocate for faculty and staff and is responsible for administration and support of the Faculty Development Committee, developing and implementing programs to aid faculty recruitment and retention, supporting departmental plans to further individual instructional excellence, and leading initiatives that contribute to faculty mentoring and professional development. The Associate Dean will also oversee related matters for staff. Working with the Dean and College leadership, the Associate Dean for Faculty Affairs serves as primary liaison to the Office of Compliance, Diversity and Ethics, and Human Resources for hiring initiatives to build a diverse and inclusive faculty. In addition, the Associate Dean for Faculty Affairs is expected to have substantive expertise in an academic area offered by the College or in public health, and to teach two courses, annually. This is a half-time (12-month) administrative faculty position with full benefits, with the remainder of the time will be spent as a tenured faculty member in one of the academic units comprising the College. Associate Dean for Academic Affairs

The Associate Dean for Academic Affairs oversees the academic operations of the College, spanning all academic departments. The Associate Dean for Academic Affairs provides leadership to support the development of new degrees and courses, and supports decentralized program review and evaluation. The Dean also provides oversight for external accreditation processes and manages academic program procedures and policies for the College. The Associate Dean for Academic Affairs works effectively with the College’s leadership, especially Department Chairs and faculty, in all aspects of the academic enterprise and its interface with students, faculty and university personnel working to ensure the quality and accountability of academic programs. 

The Associate Dean for Academic Affairs will have research and teaching experience in a discipline in the College or one ordinarily found in a School or College of Public Health, and will teach a minimum of one course, annually. The Associate Dean for Academic Affairs represents the College when the Dean is not available to do so. 

The position is a full-time (12-month) administrative faculty position with full benefits. Successful candidates will qualify for tenure at the rank of full professor. Candidates with demonstrated excellence in academic leadership beyond 12 years may be considered for appointment as Senior Associate Dean. This position reports directly to the Dean of the College.
