Pre-Course Requirements

Refresher Program Nurse

In accordance with the regulations established by the Commonwealth of Virginia and the agencies to which a registered nurse may be assigned for a clinical experience, the following 6 requirements must be met and documented prior to beginning the clinical portion of the course.

Requirement 1 - Criminal Background Review and Drug Screen: Clinical agencies mandate that all professional nurses returning to clinical practice have a criminal background review and drug screen. Similar to a review for employment, failure to clear the criminal background review will prevent admission and completion of the course.

Currently, CastleBranch, Inc. is the fee-based provider you will contract with to provide the required criminal background review and coordinator of the drug screen. The annual, nonrefundable fee of $103.75 is paid directly to CastleBranch, Inc. In addition to conducting the criminal background review, CastleBranch, Inc. will track and verify compliance of all pre-course requirements listed below including immunizations, physical assessment, drug screen, BLS certification, proof of health insurance, and confirmation of professional licensure as a registered nurse. If you reside outside the immediate Washington, DC metropolitan area and require additional county/counties searches at a cost of $12 for each additional county of residence within the last 7 years, capped at 3 additional searches.

Note: Results of criminal background checks are confidential. However, any arrests, regardless of adjudication, occurring after acceptance and during enrollment in a course must be reported to the Director of Academic Outreach. Failure to promptly notify the Director may be grounds for dismissal from the course.

The first step to meeting the pre-course requirements is to order your background check from CastleBranch by following the instructions at the bottom of this announcement.

Requirement 2 - Licensure: An active or inactive state license as a registered nurse.

Requirement 3 - Physical Examination: A physical examination within 6 months to verify: (1) general health status; and (2) the ability to move and or lift adult patients while performing nursing care.

Requirement 4 - Immunizations Requirements: The clinical agencies require the immunizations listed below for all health care providers including staff, GMU faculty, and Academic Outreach clinical course participants.

Requirement 5 - Basic Life Support Recognition: Throughout the enrollment period, attendees must maintain a current "Basic Life Support for Health Care Provider" recognition status awarded by the American Heart Association (AHA). American Heart Association certification is preferred; however, American Red Cross certification is also accepted.

Requirement 6 - Health Insurance: You are required to have personal health care coverage while enrolled in the course. The University and clinical agency are not financially responsible for medical care provided during the enrollment period.
