Faculty and Featured Speakers

As a multidisciplinary program, faculty throughout the university provide instruction to curricula within the senior housing administration concentration. Faculty responsible for the majority of core coursework in the program are located within the College of Health and Human Services's Department of Health Administration and Policy and include nationally recognized leaders in health administration, economics, policy, and strategy.   • Maribeth Bersani
    Senior Vice President of Public Policy, Assisted Living Federation of America (ALFA)

    Maribeth BersaniMaribeth Bersani has worked in the field of aging for 30 years and is currently senior vice president of public policy for the Assisted Living Federation of America (ALFA). ALFA is the largest trade association representing assisted living providers.

    Prior to joining ALFA, Bersani served as national director of government affairs for Sunrise Senior Living. During her tenure at Sunrise, she held additional development and operations management positions, including regional director of operations for seven Sunrise communities in the southeast. She also previously served as executive deputy director of the New York State Office for the Aging, where she helped develop and implement statewide initiatives on behalf of New York State’s three million elderly.

    Bersani has a masters degree in gerontology from the Leonard Davis School of Gerontology at the University of Southern California.

  • Doug Fullaway
    Vice President of Senior Living Sales for RealPage Inc.

    Doug FullawayDouglas Fullaway is vice president of senior living sales for RealPage Inc., where he leads the company's growth of its "Vigilan" software (www.vigilan.com), providing full scale operations, clinical, and marketing efficiency to more than 700 senior living communities serving 50,000 seniors in 49 states. Fullaway is a featured speaker within the graduate course "Senior Housing Management & Operations" (HAP 650). 

  • Steve Gurney
    Founder/Publisher, Guide To Retirement Living

    Steve GurneySteve Gurney founded Douglas Publishing in 1990 to publish the Guide to Retirement Living, which grew to include three regional editions: D.C. metro, State of Maryland, and the Philadelphia region. In 1998, Gurney sold his company to Greater Washington Publishing Inc., a wholly owned subsidiary of The Washington Post Company. He continues to serve as publisher of the Guide, and has additionally founded the ProAging Network and the ProAging Email Network, important resources for senior-serving professionals. He has also hosted a weekly radio show on retirement living options in the D.C. metro area.

    Gurney serves or has served on the board of directors for the Alzheimer's Association, Interages, Business and Aging Task Force, Virginia Intergenerational Task Force, and the Beacon Institute. He has received awards and recognition from the Maryland Assisted Living Association, the Senior Marketing Institute, and other notable organizations. In addition to being a featured speaker within the senior housing administration program, he has served as a guest lecturer at Johns Hopkins University and served as an instructor at several additional universities and corporate training programs. He is a regular speaker at local, regional, and national events and has been featured in regional and national publications, electronic, and broadcast media.

    President of Creating Results

    Todd HarffTodd Harff is president of Creating Results, a full-service strategic marketing agency providing branding, marketing, web, public relations, and advertising for lifestyle-oriented products and services, including senior housing (www.creatingresults.com). In addition to his work with Creating Results, he is a frequent contributor to industry publications and has addressed regional and national conferences on a variety of topics related to marketing, advertising, web site design, social media, and public relations. Harff is a featured speaker within the graduate course "Senior Housing Sales & Marketing" (HAP 651).

  • David Kyllo
    Executive Director, National Center for Assisted Living (NCAL)

    Dave KylloDavid Kyllo is the executive director of the National Center for Assisted Living (NCAL), the assisted living voice of the American Health Care Association. Kyllo is responsible for leading NCAL’s advocacy on behalf of a national federation of state affiliates, as well as directing NCAL’s educational programs, award-winning publications, and quality programs.

    Kyllo has 25 years of experience working in government relations, regulatory, and public affairs in Washington, D.C. He has served with two White House Administrations and both the United States House of Representatives and United States Senate. In December 2007, Kyllo was elected chair of the Center for Excellence in Assisted Living Board of Directors, which includes NCAL, AARP, the Alzheimer’s Association, Pioneer Network, and other national assisted living organizations. He previously served as a member of the Assisted Living Workgroup Steering Committee and contributed to its 2003 report, U.S. Senate Special Committee on Aging from the Assisted Living Workgroup. Also in 2003, Kyllo was named to the National Commission on Nursing Workforce for Long Term Care, which developed practical recommendations regarding recruiting and retaining a skilled, long-term care workforce.

    A graduate of the University of Northern Iowa, Kyllo lectures and presents nationally on a variety of assisted living and long-term care issues.
