MS Nutrition Students Volunteered at Real Food for Kids Events

Food Day is an annual event in which students are guided through a series of stations designed to highlight the importance of food choices.

Several Nutrition MS students participated in two recent Food Day events sponsored by Real Food for Kids, a local nonprofit that works to increase the amount of healthy foods in school systems and communities. Adam Scott, Garrett Trump, Richard Xiao, and Kelly Kogan helped out at Sleepy Hollow Elementary School’s Food Day in Falls Church on October 2, while Richard Xiao and Jessie Ferguson joined Scott and Kogan to provide assistance at Sully Elementary School’s Food Day in Sterling on October 23.

Food Day is an annual event in which students at a participating school are guided through a series of stations that are designed to highlight the importance of food choices and their impact on fitness and academic performance. This year’s stations included workshops on making quick and easy breakfasts, healthy snacking, and what to eat and drink before and after exercise. There were also farm animals and yoga and zumba demonstrations.

Real Food for Kids is a parent-led organization that works collaboratively with school officials, parents, and students to improve the nutritional quality of food served at public schools in Northern Virginia. It also supports school-based programs that promote the importance of eating healthy, nutritious food. Mason’s Department of Nutrition and Food Studies is an active supporter of Real Food for Kids in these efforts.
