BSN Admissions: Prerequisites and Eligibility

Prerequisite Course Requirements

In order to be eligible for admission to the BSN programs, all applicants must complete the necessary prerequisite coursework for their specific program prior to enrolling in the program.

Nursing Prerequisites

  • Bioethics (3 cr)
  • Anatomy and Physiology (8 cr)*
  • Microbiology (4 cr)*
  • Human Lifespan Development (3 cr) – not required for RN to BSN or Co-enrollment BSN program applicants
  • Statistics (3 cr)
  • Nutrition (3 cr) – not required for RN to BSN or Co-enrollment BSN program applicants

Mason Core Course Requirements

  • English Composition (3 cr)
  • Communication (3 cr)
  • Literature (3 cr)
  • Arts (3 cr)
  • Social Science (3 cr) – General Psychology is required for Mason students
  • Western Civilization (3 cr)
  • Global Understanding (3 cr)
  • Information Technology (3 cr)
  • Quantitative Reasoning (3 cr)
  • Electives (7 cr) – Sociology or Anthropology course is recommended

*Courses expire after five years for Accelerated Second Degree and Traditional applicants. Anatomy and Physiology and Microbiology coursework cannot be more than five years old by the time of BSN enrollment. For fall 2018 admission, courses must have been completed during or after fall 2013. Courses completed during the spring or summer 2013 semester will not meet this requirement.

Application Eligibility Guidelines

To be eligible to apply for the BSN program, applicants must:

  • receive admission to Mason (all applicants)
  • complete all nursing prerequisites by 
    • May 20 - end the of Mason’s spring term (all applicants)
    • December 15 - end of Mason's fall term for spring admissions (RN to BSN and Co-enrollment BSN applicants)
  • complete two of the three science nursing prerequisite courses by the date of application (all applicants)
  • achieve a satisfactory GPA in the designated nursing prerequisite coursework (all applicants)
  • successful candidate typically achieves minimum nursing prerequisite GPA of 3.0 (all applicants)
  • achieve no less than grade of C (not C-) in each nursing prerequisite course (all applicants)
  • achieve a minimum GPA of 2.0 in general education/elective prerequisite coursework, with no less than grade of C or better (not C-) in each general education/elective course (all applicants)
  • submit the online BSN Departmental Application (all applicants)
  • submit supporting documents package by the stated deadline (all applicants)
  • submit a three-minute video via SlideRoom submissions (Traditional and Accelerated Second Degree applicants)
  • submit an essay via SlideRoom submissions (Traditional and Accelerated Second Degree applicants)
  • submit a resume
    • via SlideRoom (Traditional and Accelerated applicants)
    • included in the supporting documents package – Part C (RN to BSN and Co-enrollment BSN applicants)
  • take the HESI-A2, version 1 (Traditional and Accelerated applicants)
  • complete all Mason Core course requirements by May 20 - end of Mason's spring semester (Traditional and Accelerated Second Degree applicants)
  • hold a US-based RN license at the start of the BSN program (RN to BSN applicants)
  • have completed a diploma or associates degree in nursing (RN to BSN applicants)
  • be admitted and enrolled in an AAS-Nursing program at a partner institution (Co-enrollment BSN applicants)

Simply meeting the BSN departmental application prerequisites and eligibility requirements does not guarantee admission to the BSN programs.
