Non-Graduate faculty status and dissertation committee service

Tenured and tenure-track faculty members constitute the "graduate faculty" of the university. For a non-graduate faculty member (non-tenure line faculty, external partner, term faculty...etc.)  to serve on a doctoral student’s dissertation committee, approval is needed from the department, the College, and the Office of the Provost. Application consists of a letter of support from the chair of the department and the candidate’s CV sent to the Associate Dean of Faculty and Staff Affairs.  Note that if the candidate is external to Mason, he/she will first need to become affiliate faculty to the University and the graduate faculty application will be incorporated in that process.  For more information, contact the Office of Faculty and Staff Affairs (Jennifer Sturgis jsturgis@gmu.edu).
